Provide financial incentives or food vouchers to students for proper recycling behavior
Competition between dorm buildings
Optional recycling quiz/test each semester, on completion students receive a voucher
Investing in Reverse Vending Machines (RVM)
Rewards could include coupons and discounts for on-campus food
Increase signage
Signs should direct individuals to the locations of waste management bins, especially recycling bins that either rotate or are found in unique locations
Signs should also be made apparent to new students and residents that suggest what can be recycled on campus to avoid recycled objects being found in general waste.
Permanent glass and electronic collection bins in dorms
Placing the collection bins in the bottom floor of dorms increases their visibility and accessibility which will, in turn, increase recycling rates
The rotating bins can be inconvenient because they shift locations on a weekly basis. It leads to residents opting to collect glass or recycling until the bin returns, or just throw it away with the rest of their waste
Monitor recycling rate
With the assistance of volunteers, general trash can be monitored for the percentage of recycled waste found and use that to determine how effective signs, bin locations, and our recommendations are to make adjustments.
Recommendations
Add dog waste stations on campus
By doing this it leads to a cleaner campus.
Educate on the importance on proper disposal
Spreading campus awareness (flyers, posters, social media)
Install E-waste bins in Fenwick Library and the Piedmont and Eisenhower residential resource desks
Increase awareness via physical signage, school-wide emails, and incoming freshman orientations (Meadows #6)
The receipt printed by the RVM will be given to Mason Card Office
